With the Congress naming Gidderbaha MLA Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as its candidate from the Bathinda constituency, a high-stakes poll battle awaits him as the SAD is expected to field a senior leader from the seat.
Warring (41), a matriculate (as per his election affidavit in 2017), is second-time MLA from Gidderbaha. He is former president of Indian Youth Congress and is considered close to AICC president Rahul Gandhi.
He was in race to become a minister in the Capt Amarinder-led government, but could not make it. Now the Congress has fielded him from the crucial Bathinda seat.
He was once a disciple of former MP Jagmeet Singh Brar. Warring started his political career as Muktsar block chief of the Youth Congress in 2000 and was promoted as Muktsar district president of the IYC in 2002. He was elected vice-president of Punjab Youth Congress in 2008. In the 2012 Assembly elections, he defeated then PPP chief Manpreet Singh Badal from Gidderbaha. In 2017, he defeated SAD’s Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon.
He has taken on the Badals on several occasions. During the previous SAD-BJP government, he once barged into the Sangat Darshan programme of the then CMParkash Singh Badal and confronted him on issues concerning his constituency.
