Eat healthy foods that detoxify liver, say docs

Today is World Liver Day and experts have observed an increase in the case of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Fatty liver disease is a disorder that occurs due to excessive build-up of fat which leads to scarring of liver. Known as silent killer it often shows no signs and only timely check-up can help in detecting the disease.

City-based gastroenterologist, Dr Deepak Sharma said regular check-up was the key and lifestyle modifications can only help in curing it. “Healthy diet, daily exercise, keeping weight under control can actually help remove fat in liver and reduce the scarring as well,” he said.

Liver is the most important organ of the digestive system and can be damaged easily if no proper care is taken. “Alcohol consumption can ruin the liver in more ways than one can imagine. It can damage the liver cell and leads to swelling and scarring,” said another gastroenterologist from the city.

“Your liver is an important organ, therefore, it makes sense to do what you can to protect it, and the foods listed below have revealed beneficial effects on the liver. FOOD FOR LIVER

Oatmeal: Oats and oatmeal contain compounds called beta-glucans that help reduce the amount of fat restored in the liver and it also contains fibers that are helpful for the liver

Garlic: Garlic helps to stimulate the liver. If you consume garlic it reduces body weight and fat content in people with NAFLD and thus is helpful. Being overweight or obese is a contributing factor to NAFLD.

Grapefruit: Grapefruit is rich in antioxidants naringenin and naringin namely that naturally protect our liver. Grapefruit is a good fruit to be consumed to keep your liver healthy by fighting damage and inflammation, thus protecting the liver

Grapes: Liver-friendly food: Grapes especially red and purple grapes, lowers inflammation, prevent damage and increases antioxidants levels, thus improving liver function.

Olive Oil: Eating too much fat is not good for the liver, but Olive oil is considered to be healthy fat. It has positive effects on the liver. Thus, olive oil decreases the levels of fat and improves liver enzyme levels.

Nuts: Favourite of all: Nuts are rich in fats, nutrients. It improves the level of liver enzymes and thus is an important food group for liver health.
