Despite repeated directions to increase enrolment, maintain punctuality and raise academic standards in government schools, many teachers remain absent from duty.

The matter came to the fore on Thursday when MA Rather, Chief Education Officer (CEO), paid surprise visits to four schools.

At the primary school at Kallar, the CEO found two teachers absent. Zohra Firdose was on medical leave since September 2018 while Ranzila Ara was shown on casual leave on Thursday and on treasury duty on Wednesday.

The Zonal Education Officer was directed to stop the salary of Ranzila Ara till she produces the deputation order or duty slip and apprises the CEO office of the type and period of leave sanctioned in favour of Zohra Firdose.

At the Government Middle School at Dalogra, of the eight teachers posted, only two were present while of the 62 students enrolled, only 12 were present.

A teacher, Surjeet Kumar, was on medical leave, two teachers were marked on casual leave while one column was kept blank in the attendance register.

The ZEO was directed to stop the salary of the second in charge and produce a copy of the sanctioned medical leave.

The functioning of Chingus Higher Secondary School was found satisfactory. However, the CEO directed tutors to teach students in classrooms and not in the open.

On finding children of labourers wandering outside the middle school in Narian village, the CEO asked their parents to admit them to the school.
