The police today claimed to have cracked a blind murder case with the arrest of two suspects, including the wife of the deceased. Those arrested have been identified as Pooja, alias Pushpa, wife of victim Anil Tank, who was murdered on April 11, and her lover Mohammad Shahnawaz, a resident of Uttar Pradesh.

Mohali SSP Harcharan Singh Bhullar said: “During the probe, the police zeroed in on the victim’s wife and arrested her, along with her paramour, on April 18 near Lalru. She admitted to have committed the crime during interrogation.”

The SSP said on April 11, Anil’s body was recovered from a field near Tofanpur village and a murder case was registered. The SSP said he formed a team led by Varun Sharma, SP (Investigations), along with Simranjit Singh, DSP, Dera Bassi, to probe the murder. The police worked on various theories to solve the case.

He said: “During interrogation, it came to light that Pooja allegedly had an illicit relationship with Shahnawaz. Recently, Anil, a resident of Mumbai, had come to Chandigarh at his in-laws’ place to take Pooja along with him. She objected to it, which often led to fight between the couple. Therefore, Pooja, along with her boyfriend, hatched a plan to kill her husband as they wished to marry.

On April 10, Pooja, along with her paramour, made a plan to visit Sonepat and took her husband along with them on a motorbike. When they reached near Tofanpur village, Lalru, Shahnawaz stopped his bike on the pretext of paying an obeisance at a dargah.

Shahnawaz, who had good relations with Anil, managed to bring him near the dargah on the night of April 10 and later killed him by hitting bricks on his head. The duo then fled away after taking all identification proofs of the deceased, said the SSP.

The police conducted raids and nabbed the woman and her paramour from the ITI intersection, Lalru, as they were fleeing from the city. They have been booked under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC. The police would procure their remand to interrogate them further.
