Terming the Modi-led NDA government “Anti-Dalit, anti-poor and anti-farmer”, the Congress candidate for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, Chaudhary Santokh Singh, today said if voted back to power, the BJP would abolish the reservation system in the country.
“Modi will implement the hidden agenda of the RSS by amending Dr BR Ambedkar’s Constitution to abolish the reservation system in the country, which was already exposed during the Bihar Assembly polls. But people of Bihar gave the BJP a befitting reply for the same in the form of a humiliating defeat in the state,” Chaudhary said while addressing a massive gathering at Nurmahal in the Nakodar Assembly segment.
Accompanied by senior Congress leader Jagbir Brar, Chaudhary cautioned the gathering over not dividing the anti-Modi votes by casting these in favour of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which is virtually a “non-performer” and “B” team of the SAD-BJP in Punjab.
“You all know that the BSP and SAD are always hand in glove to make a cut in the Congress’ vote bank. The same practice is being repeated this time too,” Chaudhary alleged.
Former MLA Jagbir Brar said the anti-BJP wave had already gained momentum in the entire country and on May 19, (last phase of polling), people of Punjab would put the last nail in the coffin of the Modi government.
Chaudhary spoke about the Congress promises in the poll manifesto and explained about the dream scheme of minimum income guarantee, in which Rs 72,000 per annum income would be guaranteed to every poor citizen.
He said the Congress had promised a holistic agenda of affirmative action for SCs, STs, and OBCs, who constitute a little more than 75 per cent of the population.
The Congress has assured to set up an equal opportunities commission, which will recommend affirmative action strategies and policies to achieve equality and equity in education, employment and in economic opportunities, he added.
He said if voted to power, the Congress would fill all backlog vacancies reserved for SCs, STs, and OBCs in government, semi-government and central public sector organisations within 12 months.
The Congress promised to amend the Constitution to provide for reservation in promotion for SCs, STs, and OBCs, he said, adding that special attention would be paid to the educational and health needs of the Scheduled Tribes.
“The Congress promised to pass a law to provide for reservation for SCs, STs and OBCs in private higher educational institutions,” the Congress candidate said.
Pointing out the alleged “criminal and callous” attitude of the SAD on the gruesome incidents of sacrilege and police firing in which four youths were killed in Nakodar in 1986, Chaudhary said even SAD candidate Charanjit Singh Atwal also passed the buck to his party as far as the allegation of “hushing up” the report of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the incident was concerned.
He claimed that the SAD would be vanished from the Punjab politics after the Lok Sabha polls as it would not win even a single seat. Chaudhary said the SAD had forfeited its moral right to term itself ‘panthic party’.
Prominent among others present on the dais included senior Congress leader Dr Navjot Singh Dahiya and Block Samiti president Baljit Singh Johal.
