The CBSE has introduced a few changes in the curriculum in Classes X and XII. Internal assessment of 20 marks in all the main subjects has been introduced from this session onwards.

While a few academicians believe that it will lead to “malpractice”, others believe that there was nothing bad in assessing the students in this manner as it will help them remain disciplined throughout the year in the school.

Principal Nankana Sahib Public School Harmit Kaur told The Tribune that many changes had been introduced by CBSE this year. Few chapters from social science for Class X have been removed from the syllabus, which has lessened the burden. At the same time, a chapter on Indo-China relations has also been deleted, which should be have ideally been included as it will help students know about the strategic relations of India.

“In almost every subject, an internal assessment of 20 marks has been introduced, which means the board will set papers of 80 marks each and remaining 20 marks will be given by the school authorities. “Now, some parents have started keeping tuitions for children with the teachers teaching main subjects in their respective schools, just to get good marks in internal assessment. Secondly, there are chances of teachers exploiting students in the name of internal assessment. This has put a lot of stress on children and parents and it will give rise to malpractices,” said the Principal.

While Ritu Jindal, a science teacher at Concept tutorials here, however, said it was good as internal assessment would provide the school some control on the performance.

The parents, however, said they were too confused to comment on anything. “Most schools will provide good marks to students to show good result. At the same time, few teachers will have an opportunity to settle scores with the children, in case the latter do not remain attentive in the class or create indiscipline,” said a parent.
