Woman ends life; husband, in-laws among 7 booked

Panipat, April 17

A 36-year-old woman reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her home in Shanti Nagar here on Tuesday. The police have booked seven persons, including her husband and in-laws, on the charge of abetment to suicide.

The deceased was identified as Kavita, the wife of Manjeet of Panipat’s Daryapur Tola village.

Kavita’s brother Gajender, in his complaint to the police, said his sister had married Manjeet 14 years ago. “Manjeet told me on Tuesday that Kavita committed suicide by hanging herself at home,” he said.

He suspected that Kavita was murdered. “Kavita’s in-laws tortured her regularly,” Gajender alleged.

“A suicide note was recovered from a diary in a room where Kavita’s body was found hanging. The suicide note is fake. Her mobile phone is missing,” he said.

The accused — Manjeet, mother Bharpai, father Dalip Singh, brother Jogender, sister Kanta, her husband Rajbeer and Manjeet’s cousin — have been booked under Sections 306 and 34 of the IPC.

“Manjeet and my sister’s in-laws are responsible for Kavita’s death,” Gajender said.

Model Town police station SHO Inspector Harvinder Singh said the body was handed over to her family after the postmortem examination.
