Karnal, April 17

A day before Industrial Training Institute (ITI) reopens following the police lathicharge on students here on April 12, the district authorities on Wednesday constituted a coordination committee, comprising ITI students, teachers and cops, to maintain peace on the campus.

Students had blocked the NH-44 and indulged in stone pelting in protest against the death of a 20-year-old ITI student who came under the wheels of a roadways bus on April 11 when he was trying to board it. Students charged that state transport bus drivers do not stop buses at designated stops, forcing them to chase buses.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Surinder Singh Bhoria has deployed two traffic cops near the ITI to assist students to board buses.

“The committee will ensure a peaceful environment in the ITI and take steps so that such incidents are avoided in the future. Outsiders trying to create trouble will not be spared,” he said.

The police had booked about 250 students for the April 12 incident and rounded up 104 students, who were later released on bail.

Two investigations — one by Karnal SDM Narender Malik and the other by ASP Mukesh Kumar — are in progress.

Both officials have recorded the statements of ITIstaff members, while the ASP has recorded the statements of police personnel as well.
