Karnal, April 12
Sugarcane farmers who were staging a dharna at the Piccadilly sugar mill against the sealing of the mill ended their dharna after 10 days following the assurance of Deputy Commissioner Vinay Partap Singh. They were also demanding relaxation of one month for the sale of the remaining produce.
The district authorities assured them that all efforts were being made to help the farmers sell their remaining crop. The mill was sealed by the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSBCB) for the violation of NGT norms in the handling of waste management.
After a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner in Indri on Friday, the farmers announced to call off their strike. “We have been assured that the mill will be opened,” said Rampal Chahal, president of the Ganna Sangharsh Samiti, Bhadson.
“The sugar mill has submitted an application to the HSPCB for the re-opening of the sealed sugar mill. A team of the board has inspected the mill and will send a report to the authorities. Based on the inspection report, the HSPCB will decide about the re-opening of sugar mill,” said the Deputy Commissioner.
