Chandigarh, April 11

With the Navaratra fest under way and the BJP high command expected to announce city MP candidate’s name anytime, three ticket aspirants seemed to have taken refuge in God.

They are visiting temples and attending religious events like ‘jagrans’ and ‘aartis’. MP Kirron Kher performed ‘maha aarti’ at Laxmi Narayan Mandir in Sector 20, here, earlier this week. Former MP Satya Pal Jain also attended two ‘jagran’ events at the Grain Market, Sector 26, and Colony No. 4 last evening.

City BJP chief Sanjay Tandon also attended three ‘jagran’ programmes at the Grain Market, Sector 26, Dhanas and Colony No. 4 yesterday. He also paid obeisance at Kali Mata temple in Kalka. The city BJP chief earlier attended ‘jagrans’ in Mauli Jagran and Mani Majra on April 6 and 7.

BJP media in-charge Ravinder Pathania said: “It is not due to the elections that our party president is attending jagrans. He attends jagrans every year during Navaratras.”

Tandon said: “We do not make political statements in such gatherings as our presence is enough in the crowd.”

Kher’s political adviser Sahdev Salaria said: “The MP often attends religious events. It is not because of the elections that she is attending such events. Leaders of all parties are attending such events.”

Satya Pal Jain said: “People call us for religious events in the city every year and we attend them.”

Sources said even the party high command was earlier waiting for the Navaratras to make the announcement. Tickets for Haryana, Punjab are likely to be announced along with Chandigarh.

“We waited till 1 am on Wednesday with the hope that the ticket may be announced anytime. However, it cannot be done. Meetings of senior leaders have already been held. Now only final announcement is to be made. We were anxiously waiting today as well,” a senior party leader said.

‘Chai Pe Charcha’

Chandigarh: The city BJP organised several meetings at different places under its campaign, ‘Chai Pe Charcha’, here today. The meetings were held at Labour Chowk, Sector 44, at a house in Sector 45, residence of the Guest Teachers’ Association, Chandigarh, and at the residence of Gurdip Singh, sarpanch of Raipur Kalan village. City BJP chief Sanjay Tandon was present in the meetings to interact with people. While addressing the people, he said during the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, development works in Chandigarh accelerated and this was visible to everyone. Taking on the Congress, he said it was funny that the Congress, which was itself embroiled in several scams during its tenure, was accusing Modi of corruption.
