Q. Our son is very keen to study Hotel Management abroad after Class XII. Since he has not prepared for SAT etc, we are now thinking of sending him to Australia. Do you think it’s a good decision? Are we too late for applying for the current year’s session? — TK Laroya
A.Both Australia and New Zealand have continued to strengthen their position as the top choice for Indian students outside of North America. In fact, Australia is the second favourite choice for Indian students after the US – their numbers rose by 24.5 per cent crossing 1 lakh in 2018 (which is 12.4 per cent of the overall international enrolments).
Moreover, seven Australian universities feature among the Top 100 in the in the Global QS Rankings 2018-19.
After doing his bachelor’s Down Under, your son has the option of studying further or working anywhere in the world.
Should he wish to work in Australia after graduating, the Au government has just recently announced an ‘Additional Temporary Graduate’ visa with an extra year of post-study work rights for international students who graduate from the regional campus of a registered University — the idea being to decongest popular urban areas (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane & the Gold Coast) and attract more international students
Even UG & PG students currently holding the two-year Temporary Graduate Post-Study visa can get the additional year if they reside in a regional area.
After graduating from a regional campus, students need to reside in a regional area to qualify for the visa. So this will kick in for 2021 grads. And, to answer your last question, no it’s not too late. For the July session, you can apply by May. For the February session, apply before December to get your confirmation date 6-8 weeks before the starting date. Allow at least 8 weeks for visa).

How to apply for Canadian universities?
Q.I have just taken my Class XII board exams. Please tell me how I should apply to universities in Canada. Do they require SAT or ACT scores? I have not prepared for either. — Kabir Sood
A.Relax. No written test is necessary for obtaining admission to Canadian universities or colleges.
Although the SAT is generally not required, a few universities (e.g., McGill University) may consider SAT scores when reviewing applications.
The basic requirement for most Canadian institutions is a strong academic record demonstrated through your secondary and senior secondary results (CBSE or ICSE)
Popular programmes and universities typically require marks in the higher 80s, but this may vary across programmes and institutions.
English language proficiency: As English is not the first language in India, Indian applicants must provide an English proficiency test score. An IELTS score of 6.5 and above or TOEFL (internet-based) score of 90 and above is required.
While universities and colleges will accept either of the two, the Canadian High Commission in India highly recommends proof of your IELTS score.
If you’re applying to a Quebec-based university where the medium of instruction is French, you need to provide French proficiency test scores.
SPP-designated colleges and universities require IELTS scores (test taken within the last 24 months) with a minimum overall band of 6.0, and no individual band below 5.5.
