Haryana trio makes jr Davis Cup team

NEW DELHI:The Haryana trio of Ajay Malik, Divesh Gahlot and Sushant Dabas have made it to the junior Davis Cup team for the upcoming Asia/Oceania final qualifying matches in Thailand.

The Haryana trio of Ajay Malik, Divesh Gahlot and Sushant Dabas have made it to the junior Davis Cup team for the upcoming Asia/Oceania final qualifying matches in Thailand. Udit Gogoi is the reserve member of the side. 

The selectors have gone by national U-16 rankings while picking the squad. Bhakti Shah, Sudipta Senthil Kumar and Sanjana Sirimala make the girls team for the junior Fed Cup. Gargi Pawar is the reserve member of the team. 

Gargi Pawar is the reserve member of the side. The Davis Cup is scheduled to be held from April 8-13 while Fed Cup is scheduled for April 15-20.

Ajay Malik, who rose from the mud courts of Gohana had won the U-14 national title at Fenesta Open in October 2016. Born on January 23, 2003 at village Madina in Gohana sub-division of district Sonepat, Ajay is the son a former wrestler Ajmer Malik. 

He got his training at the Netaji Subhash Chander Bose Sports Academy at Madina village. Currently, he is playing an ITF international tournament at Raipur in Chhattisgarh. Dabas hails from Gurugram while Gahlot is from Sonepat. Haryana Tennis Association general secretary Suman Kapur said, “Haryana is doing quite well in lawn tennis for past sometime. Last year, four out of six players from the national team for the Indo-Nepal series were from Haryana. This year, they have made it to the junior Davis Cup team.” — PTI/TNS
