PU remembers Mahadevi Verma

Chandigarh: The Department of Hindi, PU, on Tuesday organised a special event to commemorate the birth anniversary of poet and author Mahadevi Verma. Dr Gurmeet Singh, chairperson of the department, said Mahadevi was a literary genius whose thought process was much ahead of her times and that made her work relevant even today. The programme began with the screening of a short film on the life and literary works of Mahadevi. This was followed by student presentations on various aspects of life and works of the poet, who is also a Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan awardee. TNS

USOL sports meet

Chandigarh: The University School of Open Learning, PU, organised its annual sport meet here on Tuesday. Registrar Prof Karamjeet Singh declared the meet open. He stressed on the importance of sports in the life of a student. Students participated in activities such as 50 m, 100 m, 400 m race, long jump, shot put and discus throw. Besides, fun games such as tug of war, lemon race, pillow fighting were also part of the event. TNS 

Legal quiz at UILS

Chandigarh: ‘Inquisitorial’, a regional-level legal quiz, was organised at the University Institute of Legal Studies, PU. The aim was to create awareness on prevalent legal events in the country. The quiz was conducted in two rounds — written and oral. As many as 40 teams comprising two students each participated in the quiz. Of these 10 teams reached the final round. The team comprising Jahnvi and Tushar Sharma won the quiz. The second position was held by the Sakshi and Shreya Bansal team, while Aseem and Saurabh’s team bagged the third position. TNS

Seminar on Dalit issues

Chandigarh: The Department Of Sociology, PU, is organising a two-day national seminar on ‘Emerging Dalit issues: Strategies for empowerment and development’. According to the 2011 Census, Dalits constitute 16.7 per cent of Indian population. The two-day seminar proposes to look into various forms and levels of social exclusion of Dalits. TNS

Soon, LGBT fashion show at UIFT

Chandigarh: Chandigarh State AIDS Prevention and Control Societies (CSACS), in collaboration with University Institute of Fashion Technology (UIFT&VD) and Centre for Social Work (CSW), PU, are all set to host the first-ever fashion show of the LGBT community- ‘Udaan’ on March 28. Transgenders and other members of the LGBT community will walk the ramp. “The purpose is to bring the LGBT community members into the mainstream and express acceptability in society towards them,” said Dr Prabhdip Brar, Chairperson, UIFT. NSS special camp ends

Chandigarh: The second NSS special camp at PU culminated on Tuesday. The function was presided over by Prof Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare, Prof Sanjay Kaushik, Dean Development Council, Prof Yojana Rawat, Chairperson, USOL, and Prof Parminder Singh, Director Sports, PU. Dr Navdeep Sharma, NSS programme coordinator, said the focus was on skill-building activities for overall personality development of volunteers. For this purpose, various participatory and interactive sessions on issues of social concern were organised. Regular cleanliness drives were held during the camp. TNS
