The North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala, Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi and Impact Arts, in collaboration with Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi, staged a play, ‘Kaka Thand Rakh’, as part of the two-day theatre festival, Asharfiyan-3 (2K19).

Directed by Baninderjit Singh Bunny, the play was based on the 0 Henry’s story, ‘The Cop and The Anthem’, and was adapted by Vivek Roy Khanna and Gurjant Singh.

The play was based on the story of a homeless man, played by Khanna, who was an unemployed graduate and was forced to live in the streets. In the play, which was a comedy of errors, the central character struggled to make a decent living after completing his education. A victim of star-crossed romance, he was acquainted with the importance of financial stability when his beloved left him because he was unable to foot the food bill on a date.

Dejected and unable to find a job that paid him as per his qualification, he planned to spend the winter in a prison.

Persistent, he struggled to get arrested by the police. From stalking a woman to disrupting a gathering of poets and breaking the glass window of a shop, he tried all tricks in the book just to find his way into the prison.

When he finally failed, he had a chance encounter with a nun who imparted life lessons on courage and perseverance. However, just when he got back on track and decided to look for a job, a cop arrested him and he landed in jail. The central theme of the play was unemployment at low wages for graduates.
