Gangster Lalli, accomplice held after gunfight

A team of the Organised Crime Control Unit (OCCU) arrested a gangster and his aide following a gunfight near Dehlon police station here this evening. Gangster Amanbir Singh alias Lalli Cheema of Sultanpur Lodhi, Kapurthala, presently residing at Basti Bawa Khel in Jalandhar, and his aide were on their way to Ludhiana.

Lalli suffered a bullet injury in his leg. He was taken to a private hospital at Dehlon from where he was rushed to the local civil hospital. One of his accomplices managed to flee the encounter site.

Lalli is brother of gangster Harry Cheema, who died in Chandigarh recently after he jumped from a hotel window.

Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh, IGP, told The Tribune that Lalli was wanted in more than 10 criminal cases. He had threatened to kill Navtej Singh Cheema, MLA, Sultanpur Lodhi. Kunwar said Lalli and his two aides were travelling in a car when they were intercepted by the police team. Lalli opened fire and the OCCU team led by Sub-Inspectors Hardeep Singh and Kirpal Singh retaliated and managed to arrest Lalli and his aide identified as Kuldeep Singh, alias Kaka, of Talwandi Bhai village in Kapurthala.

Two weapons one of .30 bore have been recovered from them. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.

Goon had threatened Cong MLA last year 

In May last year, Sultanpur Lodhi MLA Navtej Cheema of the Congress had alleged that he had received threats from two gangsters of his native Bussowal village. Cheema had alleged that the two brothers, Amarveer Lalli and Harjot Harry, were B-category gangsters associated with Sukha Kahlwan gang.
