Cops crack down on Holi hooligans

While the town soaked in the spirit of Holi on Thursday, traffic police personnel, going tough on hooligans, went on a challan spree. They issued challans to several motorists for violating traffic rules.

According to traffic police officials, nakas were laid in several parts of the city to take on hooligans. The traffic police also impounded two-wheelers, including six Bullets producing high-decibel sound, here.

During a special naka to check speeding and other traffic violations during the Holi celebrations, the traffic police challaned as many as 20 offenders in Dera Bassi yesterday.

In Zirakpur, the police issued as many as 46 challans for a number of traffic violations. Out of this, 11 were challaned for triple-riding on two-wheelers while the rest of them were booked for rash driving, riding without documents and using mobile phones while driving and without helmet. They also impounded two-wheelers.

Over 14 cases of minor road accidents were reported at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, on Holi. Similarly, 19 cases related to medico legal reports (MLR) were also reported at the hospital.

“A majority of the patients were accident victims, driving in inebriated state or those who had minor scuffles among groups and suffered injuries,” said a doctor preferring anonymity.

Meanwhile, the hospital received seven cases of allergy or infection during the celebrations this year.

105 emergency cases reported

A total of 105 emergency cases were reported at the Civil Hospital, including 19 medico legal reports, on Thursday. Despite being a holiday, doctors and other staff members at the Civil Hospital remained on their toes till evening due to injury cases.
