Kolkata, March 20
A young club cricketer died after collapsing on the field during a friendly match here today. Twentytwo-year-old Sonu Yadav, who represented Ballygunge Sporting Club in Cricket Association of Bengal’s 2nd Division league, collapsed at the Bata Club ground.
According to those present at the ground, the wicketkeeper-batsman was returning to the tent after finishing batting when he suddenly collapsed. He was rushed to SSKM Hospital, where he was declared brought-dead.
Ballygunge Sporting Club official Shyamal Banerjee said: “I cannot believe that Sonu is no more. Sonu was a very talented cricketer. I heard the news in the afternoon. I heard Sonu was playing with his friends because our club did not have any match (scheduled today).”
In January, another junior Bengal player, 21-year-old Aniket Sharma, had died after he collapsed on the field while warming up before a match. In April 2015, Ankit Keshri (20), a former captain of the Bengal Under-19 team, died three days after he suffered injuries when he and a teammate collided as they went for a high catch during a match. — Agencies
