Sangrur, March 17

The state Public Works Department (PWD) has sanctioned Rs 2.50 crore to carry out repairs in 31 government schools of Sangrur district. To avoid the misuse of funds, the PWD will undertake the repair works directly under the supervision of its expert committee.

Education officials said after our repeated requests failed to get the required funds from the department due to the financial crisis, the district school motivation cell prepared a list of all dilapidated schools and took up the matter with state PWD Minister and Sangrur MLA Vijay Inder Singla last year.

“During our first meeting with Singla in October last year, he promised to take a quick action for the repair of buildings. A few days ago, we received a list of 31 schools of Sangrur with the sanctioned funds for their repair,” said Kuldeep Singh, district school motivator.

The documents accessed by The Tribune shows that with the sanctioned amount, the PWD will undertake the paint, whitewash, tile and brick fitting, repair of doors and windows and other required works.

A few teachers said they hoped to see the work getting completed soon because earlier when the department sanctioned the funds, it took many months for them to get the required approvals.

“But since the PWD will now directly undertake the work without transferring any amount, we hope the work will be completed at the earliest,” said a government teacher.

Singla confirmed that the department had sanctioned Rs 2.50 crore for the repair of 31 government schools. “Apart from this, I have got 20 other government schools included in the smart school project of the Education Department and five are being repaired under the Corporate Social Responsibility scheme,” he said.
