Chandigarh, March 16

Meet an extended family with five of its members, including four women, having donated their kidneys to their spouses.

While four women members donated the organ to save the lives of their better-halves, a male member donated one for his wife. Kuljeet Kaur (40), Paramjeet Kaur (38), Supinder Kaur (38) and Jarnail Kaur (48) donated one of their kidneys to Sher Singh (42), Surmukh Singh (40), Gurnam Singh and Ram Singh (50), respectively. They all reside in Sector 26, Panchkula.

Kuldeep Singh (48), another family member who resides in Mohali, donated one of his kidneys to his wife Sukhwinder.

It is learnt that the family had a genetic disorder due to which they develop some kidney disease. “Benevolence runs in this family. Sacrificing own happiness for others seemed to be in their genes,” said Avinash Srivastava , Director, Urology and Renal Transplant Surgery, and Raka Kaushal, Director, Nephrology, at a private hospital in Mohali where the transplants were performed.

While donating kidneys, none of the four women gave it a second thought. Their primary concern was to save the lives of their near and dear ones.

Even Kuldeep Singh’s decision to donate kidney was instant. “So what if I am a male. If my wife can take care of me, why cannot I help her get rid of her agony,” he said.

The transplants were performed in the past three years. The family was honoured on World Kidney Day at the private hospital recently.
