Livestock diversification needed: V-C

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, organised its 26th Pashu Palan Mela on Friday.

Padma Shri Ram Saran Verma, a progressive farmer, was the chief guest, who inaugurated the fair.

Ram Saran Verma, from Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh, said, “We should come forward for diversification in agriculture. Except hard work, there is no way to success.”

Verma started farming in 1984 on just six acres and now he is a progressive farmer with a total cultivation on more than 150 acres.

Dr Amarjit Singh Nanda, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU, said diversification within livestock was the need of the hour. Theme slogan of the mela was, “Uttpadan di Gunvatta Vadhao, Pashu Palan ton Vadh Labh Kamao”.

He said, “We are putting in efforts to explore new avenues in livestock. Pig and goat farming are very profitable ventures if we do it in a scientific manner. Value additions of products also provide add on profit in comparison to traditional ways of livestock farming.”

GADVASU showcased all research, education and extension programmes at the mela for the benefit of livestock farmers.

Dr HK Verma, director of Extension Education, said a large number of people showed their interest in taking up goat, pig and fish farming and especially enquired about their training programmes.

Stalls at mela

Various departments of the College of Veterinary Science put up their stalls at the mela and tried their best to transfer valuable inputs and recommendations to farmers.

The excellent germplasm of the university such as cows, buffaloes, goats, pigs and poultry were demonstrated to livestock farmers.

Experts delivered talks on various aspects of livestock, poultry and fish farming and the mechanism and procedures to overcome the common problems faced by them.

Live demonstrations on various aspects along with sale of milk testing kit, mastitis diagnosis kit, teat dip practice and acaricide drug application were also demonstrated to farmers.

An endeavour by the College of Fisheries was the stall having various carp fish, ornamental fish, azolla, duckweed cultivation and integration of fish farming with other livestock farming.

People inquired about fisheries, ornamental fish and saline water fish. Value added products of the college were also displayed on their stall for sale.

The Directorate of Extension Education has published a number of books in simple regional language at a low price. Farmer showed keen interest for registering their name for monthly magazine ‘Vigyanak Pashu Palan’.

The departments such as Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries of the state put up their stalls at the mela.
