The Ambala police beefed up the security of Kashmiri students residing in rented accommodation in Mullana village in the district after a video of an ultimatum being served on people to get rooms vacated from them in 24 hours went viral on Saturday. There are nearly 150 youths from Kashmir residing in rented accommodation in the village.
Later in the day, a meeting between Kashmiri students, the sarpanch of Mullana village and the district administration was organised at the Maharishi Markandeshwar University, Mullana.
Sarpanch Naresh Chauhan said, “We are not against Kashmiri students. Around two months ago, I had asked all those who have given rooms on rent to Kashmiri students to get their verification done, but they did not do it. The viral video shows the real picture”.
Barara DSP Sudhir Taneja and Barara SDM Girish Kumar, who held the meeting, assured the Kashmiri students that their security has been beefed up. They could approach the administration if they had any issues.
Meanwhile, university students organised a Sadbhawana rally and burnt the national flag of Pakistan.
Irfan, a BSc student from Kashmir, said, “No one has threatened us but we have been asked to stay in the hostel for some days”. Vishal Garg, treasurer of MMDU, said, “Students, who want rooms in the hostel, are being accommodated.”
SP Astha Modi said, “We have spoken to people and students. Security has been beefed up in the area to ensure that no untoward incident happens. There were claims in the video of distribution of sweets but it is not true. All students are fine and nobody has threatened them. The verification of tenants is the responsibility of landlords”.
“We will take up the matter and people, who are running paying guest accommodation, will be asked to get the verification of tenant students done. They are college students and the college has also done their verification,” she added.
Meanwhile, a Kashmiri student claimed one of their classmates was manhandled on Friday. However, the SP said there was no such report.
Ensure safety of J&K students, SHOs told
Yamunanagar: Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Singh has issued directions to all station house officers (SHOs) to ensure safety and security of students from Jammu and Kashmir studying in educational institutes in Yamunanagar district. “We have taken necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of students. I have issued directions to all SHOs of the district,” the SP said. tns
