Washington: An 18-year-old girl has made a short film ‘SINGH’ based on an American-Sikh philanthropist whose campaign forced a change in turban policy. Directed by Jenna Ruiz, a student and actor from Indiana, the film is based on the 2007 incident when Gurinder Singh Khalsa was not allowed to board a flight when he refused to remove his turban after passing through each security measure. Indianapolis-based Khalsa brought the issue to the attention of the US Congress, which resulted in headgear policies being changed in airports. Khalsa was recently conferred with the prestigious Rosa Parks Trailblazer award for his campaign. pti
Australian walnuts set to enter Indian market
Melbourne: Australia and India have concluded an agreement to allow the entry of Australian walnuts in the huge Indian market. According to Australian Agriculture Minister David Littleproud, the two countries signed a market access agreement on February 6 with trade set to formally commence once the import conditions are officially gazetted by the Indian authorities. He said in the interim, 10 trial shipments will be sent. “India is already a large export market for Australian almonds and there is huge potential for our other nuts to be exported there also,” he said. 3 Indian-Americans convicted of fraud
New York: Three Indian-Americans are among six persons convicted of their role in a two-year multi-million dollar money-laundering scheme, the US Justice Department has said. Ravinder Reddy Gudipati, 61; Harsh Jaggi, 54 and Neeru Jaggi, 51, all from Laredo, Texas, were convicted following a five-week jury trial. Money derived from the sale of drugs in the US was laundered through businesses in Laredo in order to return the proceeds to Mexican drug dealers. pti
