Students of the YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan, bagged the best thesis award at a national conference on ‘Managing natural resources for sustainable agriculture’’ held in Uttar Pradesh recently. Ridham Kakar, Kiran Thakur and Saraswati Negi are research scholars in various disciplines. The award was presented by GVK Society.
While Ridham won the award for her master’’s research on “Nutritional status of vegetable-growing areas of Saproon valley of Himachal Pradesh”, Kiran studied the ‘Effect of forchlorfenuron, prohexadione calcium and brassinolide on fruit yield, maturity and quality of apricot’. Saraswati bagged the award for her thesis on ‘Studies on persistence of acephate, profenofos and triazophos in okra’. Vice-Chancellor HC Sharma congratulated the students and their research guides.
Fellowship for scientist
Dr PC Sharma, a senior scientist at the university, has been conferred the Fellowship of the Horticultural Society of India for his contribution to the field of the post-harvest technology. Currently, Dr Sharma is Dean, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Neri, Hamirpur. He was conferred with the fellowship during the Indian Horticulture Congress-2019 held at Raipur earlier this month. The scientist has developed processing protocols for the extraction of edible oil from apricot/wild apricot kernels and established extraction units for transfer
Educational trip to Malaysia
Sixteen students of biotechnology programmes were taken on a six-day educational-cum-exposure trip to Malaysia recently. The students visited various research institutions, including Malaysia University, Pahang, Penang Island, Genting Highlands and Kuala Lampur. Dr Rakesh Gupta, Dean, College of Horticulture, and head of the department of biotechnology said such tours give exposure about varied academic and research environment. Another group of BSc students also visited various research and educational institutions in the country during the annual 21-day all-India educational tour. They visited Dayalbagh Educational Institute, Agra, under a six-day exchange programme.
