Knee pain, a common ailment among the elderly, can be recovered by making adequate use of technology. This is along with following right exercise regime, medication, diet and adequate doctor-patient interaction, suggests a study conducted by experts from the PGIMER, Chandigarh.

The study was published in the Indian Journal of Palliative Care recently.

The study was conducted in Chandigarh wherein 75 out of 123 patients had reported moderate to severe pain initially. At the end of 12 months of intervention, 57 patients (46%) reported complete relief in symptoms. The remaining reported only mild pain at the end of the intervention phase. Some (17.8%) said they stopped taking analgesic (painkiller), while a few (13.8 %) reported reductions in frequency of analgesic intake after they participated in the study.

“It was found that patients forgot to exercise despite demonstrations of the same in routine OPDs. Hence, videos and broachers were handy for guiding patients about correct way of doing exercises,” said Dr Meenakshi Sharma, who conducted the study under her guide Dr Amarjeet Singh and co-guides Dr Mandeep Singh Dhillon and Dr Sukhpal Kaur. — TNS
