Bathinda, January 10

Two jail inmates tried to escape from the Bathinda Central Jail at Gobindpura village by scaling the boundary wall on Wednesday morning.

In a complaint lodged by jail superintendent Surinderpal Singh with the police, it has been stated that accused jail inmates — Buta Singh, a resident of Kothe Sangat, and Jagsir Singh, a resident of Amarpura Basti — tried to flee from the jail by breaking a slab in the barrack number 1 in block 7 of the Central Jail.

In the attempt, Buta Singh fell down from the wall and suffered a fracture in his leg. He is admitted to the Civil Hospital while Jagsir Singh was about to make an attempt to scale the wall.

The two accused had broken an almirah in the jail barrack and used it to climb the boundary wall.

Two jail warders have been suspended after the incident. Buta Singh is an undertrial in an NDPS Act case and Jagsir Singh is an undertrial in a theft case.

The Cantonment police have registered a case against both jail inmates under Sections 224, 511 and 427 of the IPC and Section 52 of Jail Manual Act.

Jail assistant superintendent Sukhwinder Singh Sahota said the two inmates reached the boundary wall after the barracks were opened on Wednesday morning, even as two jail employees have been deployed there. He said two employees had been suspended.
