Patwari caught red-handed taking bribe

Bathinda, January 10

A team of the Vigilance Bureau on Thursday caught a patwari red-handed while taking Rs 8,000 in bribe.

A VB official said Jasveer Singh, a resident of Kaljhrani village, had lodged a complaint with the bureau that patwari Sham Sukhdev Singh was demanding Rs 8,000 in bribe from him.

The Vigilance Bureau team caught the accused patwari through a trap laid by Vigilance DSP Manjit Singh.

A VB official said Sham Lal had been arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act while he was accepting Rs 8,000 from the complainant of Kaljhrani village in Bathinda district for issuing him a document pertaining to his land.

While the Vigilance Bureau arrested the patwari, the patwari union, in the presence of public, stage a protest, which was headed by union president Gurtej Singh Pakka, and raised slogans against the bureau.

Pakka alleged that the VB was wrongly arresting the patwari by putting money in his pockets deliberately as Sukhdev Singh had already done the work of the complainant. — TNS
