An FIR against Hardev Singh Laddi Sherowalia, Congress MLA from Shahkot, has been cancelled on the orders of the Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Nakodar, Tanveer Singh. The suspension of former Mehatpur SHO Parminder Bajwa, who had registered the case pertaining to illegal mining in May, has been revoked.

The police had filed the cancellation report about three months ago, but the complainant, Mohan Singh of Malri village in Nakodar, had contested it in the court.

However, Mohan Singh submitted in the court last month that he was satisfied with the inquiry into his allegations of illegal mining by Laddi and had no objection to the cancellation of the FIR.

The court observed, “Mohan Singh has not submitted evidence in support of his case. The Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Electoral Officer, Jalandhar, had formed a special team comprising officers from the departments of mining, revenue and the police who were assisted by Sub-Inspector Gurbinder Singh to look into the facts mentioned in the FIR. However, no evidence was found against the accused. Therefore, Gurbinder Singh recommended the cancellation of the FIR...”

“There are many joint statements by the inhabitants of the surrounding area of the alleged place of occurrence of the offence wherein it has been stated that there is no instance of mining of sand or smuggling etc...” the court further said.

On May 4, Laddi had been booked under Section 21 of the Mines and Minerals Act and Section 379 of the IPC. A week later, Bajwa had been booked for carrying his weapon inside the courtroom. An FIR had been lodged against him under Sections 353 and 186 of the IPC and Section 27 of the Arms Act at New Baradari police station.

Bajwa said, “As there were orders that a police officer cannot stay in the district where a case has been lodged, I got transferred to Kapurthala (Police Lines). I have been appearing in the Jalandhar court regularly. The next date of hearing is December 11.”
