Srinagar, November 13

The police have recovered at least 20 grenades and some live rounds from a woman on the outskirts of Srinagar on Tuesday evening, officials said.

The recovery was made after the police intercepted the woman, who was travelling in a Tavera taxi, at Lawaypora along the Baramulla-Srinagar highway.

The police said a checkpoint had been set up after a credible input.

“The police intercepted a vehicle at the checkpoint. A woman overground worker (OGW) was carrying ammunition, including grenades and live rounds, inside the vehicle,” a police spokesman said.

While the spokesman did not reveal the name of the woman and exact number of grenades recovered, sources said 20 grenades and some live rounds were recovered from her bag.

“The woman is being questioned as we expect more leads that can lead to further arrests,” a police officer said. The driver of the vehicle has also been detained for questioning.

He said the grenades and live rounds were being probably being taken to south Kashmir.

The police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and initiated investigation into the matter.

The arrest of the woman OGW has been made almost a fortnight after three militants were nabbed after a brief shootout when they sped through a police checkpoint near Umarabad, Narbal, along the Srinagar-Baramulla highway.
