Chandigarh, September 23

The Panjab University Syndicate in its meeting on Sunday refused to allow child care leave (CCL) to its male employees.

The Syndicate, which is the governing body of the university, decided to follow the Punjab Government rules for services. The Punjab Government doesn't allow the CCL for males and permit it for women for one-year only, while the Central Government allows it for only single male parent.

A panel comprising Dean of University Instructions (DUI) Prof Shankarji Jha, Dr Meenu Gupta, Dr Ajay Ranga and Prof Rajesh Gill, President, Panjab University Teachers' Association (PUTA), was constituted for forming rules in this regard. Besides, women employees, it allowed male employees to take the CCL for first two living children below 18 years, for a maximum period of two years (730 days) during their entire service.

Prof Gill had reasoned that taking care of children was not just the duty of women employees, but men also. The PU panel had called for submission of an affidavit along with the application of the CCL by the applicant to the effect that his or her spouse was not availing of the leave during the period he or she had applied.

VC to take call on Prof Sharma's appointment

Regarding the appointment of Prof Suresh Kumar Sharma from the statistics department as the Honorary Director of the Population Research Centre, the Syndicate decided that it should be left on the discretion of Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Raj Kumar to make the appointment. Former VC Prof Arun Kumar Grover had appointed Prof Sharma as the Honorary Director, but when he came to take the charge, an email from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stalled it. Later, the mail turned out to be fake. The faculty of the sociology department had been opposing Prof Sharma's appointment.

The Syndicate also refused to appoint Dr Ved Prakash Kamboj as the Honorary Professor in the zoology department as he is more than 81 year old.
