An eight-year-old child drowned in a dug-up plot filled with rainwater at an ‘illegal colony’ in Gharuan village at the Morinda road here today.

The deceased has been identified as Gurjot Singh, a student of Class III.

The victim’s father Baljinder Singh told the police that he had a photostat shop at the village. His younger son was playing with other children when they all went towards the illegal colony being constructed in the village.

The complainant stated that the colony was being developed by Dashmesh Property as claimed in a banner put up there. He added that the developers had dug up the plot for constructing a basement for their office. Due to the recent rains, it was filled with water. The boy fell in the dug-up area and drowned. On getting information, he, along with his friends, rushed to the spot. The boy was brought out of the water and rushed to a private hospital in Gharuan where he was declared brought dead. The victim’s father alleged that the owners of the illegal colony were responsible for his son’s death.

Meanwhile, a case under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Narinder Singh, who owns the colony, and two unknown persons at the Kharar police station.

The police have started an investigation into the case.
