Chandigarh, June 12

A Public Interest Litigation in Punjab and Haryana High Court asks authorities to frame a policy on borewells in the state, a day after a toddler who fell into a poorly-covered borewell was cremated.

The petition, which comes 24 hours after Sangrur toddler was pulled out dead five days after he fell into a 150-feet deep borewell, asks for adoption of “necessary precautions” for borewells.

The toddler, Fatehveer, fell into the seven-inch wide borewell while he was playing at his house nearby.  He is believed to have died from lack of oxygen four days before rescuers could finally reach him.

Fatehveer’s death prompted protests against authorities for “delay” in rescuing the child.
