Ropar, June 19
A former ASI facing trial along with his eight colleagues for the alleged murder of a constable allegedly visited his relatives in Chandigarh on the pretext of going to the PGI for treatment from Ropar jail. The accused, Santokh Singh, left jail yesterday morning under tight security. He, however, allegedly seen visiting his relatives and only one police guard was accompanying him.
On March 30, a local court had ordered the arrest of Santokh Singh along with eight other police officials in a 26-year-old murder case.
Randhir Singh, brother of deceased constable Paramjit Singh, alleged that he had got information that the accused was receiving VIP treatment in the jail. He claimed that when Santokh Singh visited his relatives in Chandigarh in his Innova, he clicked his pictures.
Ropar district jail Superintendent Amrik Singh said the matter was brought to his notice by Randhir Singh. He said Santokh Singh had gone to the PGI for treatment of some skin disease. He said he had written to Ropar SSP Swapan Sharma as ferrying jail inmates to hospital was responsibility of the district police. — TNS
