Amritsar Deputy Commissioner confirmed that 57 persons died in the tragic rail accident at Jora Phatak here on Friday.

However, most of the victims have not been identified as they were migrants. They did not carry any residential proof with them.

It has been learnt that many patients are serious and urgently require neurosurgery.

The spot of the incident, Dhobi Ghat locality near Golden Avenue, is a slum area where most of the residents have come here from other states for work.

“At the moment, we are focusing on rescuing the victims. We are also trying our best to compile a list to identify the deceased and the injured so as to reach their kin at the earliest,” said Deputy Commissioner Kamaldeep Singh Sangha.

The district administration has arranged for their photographs only to flash on social media sites for the identification of the train mishap victims.
