More than a wedding

Amid the craze for big fat Punjabi weddings, concept-based events are making their presence felt considerably in the city. It is being linked more and more to one’s social status. Not only couples are getting designed their wedding trousseau accordingly, guests too are being involved in the theme-based functions.

Himanshu Kher, city-based event planner who also organises theme-based weddings, says, “The western styled theme-based weddings are a thing of now. The budget is flexible when it comes to planning such weddings.”

Another event planner, Vinay Sharma, shares his experience of one such wedding that he recently organised. “We did a 1970’’s theme in which the guests’ dresses, hairstyle, even the set decoration was done according to the chosen theme. Arranging the stage according to themes is the most challenging and expensive part,” he says.

Another popular theme is royal wedding. “Brides’ customised accessories, including heavy embroidered lehenga, trendy chooda and large size kalerien are trending in the market keeping in mind the grand royal wedding theme,” says Rinku Vehal, shopkeeper in the Guru Bazaar.

Himanshu says the most significant aspect of the royal-theme wedding décor is the flower arrangement and fibre cloth drapes used for aesthetics.

Amit Rohella, another event planner, says, “Recently, we did a theme involving candles and fresh flower decor. Most of the times, clients come up with their choice and budget so we plan accordingly.”

Customised invitations also play a vital role in putting up an impression before the guests. “Clients get their invitations designed according to the theme party,’ he said.

A bride-to-be from the city shared details about her upcoming wedding. “To make my day memorable, I want a specially embroidered ‘doli’ and the traditional Punjabi wedding theme for the big day. Pre-wedding shoots are also in the trend under which our memories are captured to make them unforgettable.”
