Monkeys monkey around as MC awaits wildlife nod

The simian menace in the city has reached an alarming proportion, but the MC, residents claim, is not serious about it.

The contractor, which has been hired to catch monkeys from different parts of the city and release them in the forest, has stopped its work. Why? The MC has not obtained the requisite permission from the wildlife authorities to catch monkeys, it has been learnt.

It is estimated that 3,600 monkeys roam in the city, scaring residents.

Kadam Singh Ahlawat, councillor from ward no. 11, said: “Residents of HSVP Sectors 1 and 2 are the worst affected by the simian menace as the two sectors are close to the JLN Canal and Tilyar Lake.”

He further said, “Officials concerned should be sensitive towards the plight of residents. Such matters should be cleared on priority.”

Ajit, the contractor, said: “The MC has been apprised of the matter. It has now applied for the permission from the Wildlife Department.”

Wildlife Inspector Jai Bhagwan said, “The department has received an application from the MC for the grant of permission. The application has been forwarded to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife)-cum-Chief Wildlife Warden.”
