Bathinda, Febraury 10
Security arrangements at the Bathinda Central Jail have once again come under the scanner following the recovery of a mobile phone from the jail premises. A check was carried out by the jail authorities on Saturday. The jail assistant superintendent, in a complaint filed at the Cantt police station, has stated that the authorities launched a search operation inside the jail and recovered a mobile phone. Investigating Officer Jagmail Singh said a case had been registered against jail inmate Gurjant Singh, a resident of Gurdaspur, under Section 188 of the IPC and Section 52-A of Jail Manual Act on the basis of the complaint lodged by the jail authorities. Sources said cell phones helped criminals threaten witnesses, besides making plans to escape from the jail. Sometimes, the prisoners also extort money while staying in jail. Notably, the state government had decided to install jammers in all jails but the project has not yet started due to lack of funds.
