Mishaps killed 62 last year: Police

AMRITSAR: As many as 62 persons were killed and 82 injured in road accidents in 2018. Every year the killer city roads claim more than 60 lives. In 2017, 63 persons were killed in such mishaps.

As many as 62 persons were killed and 82 injured in road accidents in 2018. Every year the killer city roads claim more than 60 lives. In 2017, 63 persons were killed in such mishaps. The details were released by Police Commissioner SS Srivastav here on Saturday.

The officer claimed that the police had maintained the law and order well throughout the last year as crime incidents recorded a fall. The cases of theft, burglary and snatching in 2018 were less than those of 2017.

As per the data released by the police, there were 22 murders reported in 2018. Out of 22, the police cracked 20 cases. Maximum cases of theft have been reported in the last year. Out of 405 theft cases, the police have solved 74. Also 114 cases pertaining to 2017 have been cracked.

The police record reveals that two cases of dacoity, 185 of burglary and eight of robbery have been reported in 2018.

Following the high pressure of the state government regarding the narcotics cases, the police registered 418 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested 621 persons. They have recovered 20.430 kg of heroin, 4.212 kg of opium, 27.560 kg of poppy husk, 10.716 kg of narcotic powder and 1,36,477 habit forming capsules/tablets.

Similarly, the police lodged 28 cases and arrested 43 persons under the Arms Act. The city police recovered 10 revolvers, 24 pistols, two rifles of .315 bore, three guns of 12 bore and 169 cartridges.

The city police also recovered a huge quantity of illicit liquor and alcohol. As many as 313 persons have been arrested under the Gambling Act.

The police commissioner praised the officers, who worked dedicatedly and traced the blind murders and nabbed notorious gangsters.
