A mentally challenged man laid down on the railway tracks in front of a goods train at the city railway station on Tuesday morning. He, however, had a miraculous escape as the train driver applied brakes after seeing him on the tracks.

The incident had put the railway official on toes. Even the Government Railway Police reached the spot to probe the matter. However, when they found that the person was mentally challenged and homeless, the police did not register any case against the person.

Investigation officer ASI Kashmira Singh of the GRP said after the railway officials informed the GRP about the incident around 11.50 am, he immediately reached the spot and started the probe. However, he found that the said person was mentally challenged and he had been living around the railway station for a long time. “According to the eye witnesses, the person was walking alongside the railway tracks and when the goods train arrived he laid down on the tracks. The train driver applied emergency brakes. Since the train was slow, the driver managed to stop it,” the ASI revealed. “The person even failed to give his name, then how could he reveal the reason of taking the extreme step,” he said. The ASI said railway officials and the GRP will now pay heed to prevent any such kind incident.

No case registered

Though the incident had put railway officials on toes, the GRP did not register any case of trespassing on railway property. Officials of the GRP said a case was not registered as the person was mentally challenged.
