The State Election Commission (SEC) has declared the office of the sarpanch of the Mehmood Pur village gram panchayat near Nakodar as vacant. The seat was reserved for the Scheduled Caste. Five seats of panchs has also been declared as vacant.
The SEC has issued a notification, saying the Nakodar block has 129 village panchayats, out of which 128 villages have elected sarpanchs and panchs, but the office of the sarpanch of the Mehmod Pur gram panchayat and five seats of panchs are vacant.
Nakodar Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO) Abhey Kumar said: “The Rural Development Department has sought a report in this connection.”
He said the office of the sarpanch was reserved for the Scheduled Caste candidate, but there was only one SC family in the village. No one filed nomination papers in protest and no election was held. Now the election would be held as per the new notification.
