Hoshiarpur, July 24

A youth body ‘Sikh Youth of Punjab (SYP)’ will organise a conference on groundwater crisis in Hoshiarpur on August 3.

The conference will serve as a platform for the young intellectuals and subject experts to share political, legal and economic understanding on the issue of river waters and groundwater crisis in the state and its effects to formulate the role of the youth in addressing the problem.

The decision was taken a meeting of SYP office-bearers, which was held under party president Paramjeet Singh Mand here today.

“A number of canals in the state are set to dry and farmers are being forced to extract groundwater to meet their farming needs, resulting in the groundwater depletion,” said Paramjeet Singh.

The SYP leader alleged that making of “Indira Gandhi Canal”, popularly known as “Rajasthan Canal” was one of the biggest fraud played with the state by the then Central government, which had been taking more than half of the total water of rivers to Rajasthan.

He said the water table had fallen to an alarming extent.
