Medical college nurse commits suicide

A nurse working with Dr Radhakrishnan Medical College and Hospital reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan yesterday.

The deceased, Monica (32), had been working in the hospital for the last two years.

In her suicide note, she has accused the senior staff of harassing her. Monica’s husband Asnik Katnoria works in Shimla.

She took the extreme step when her five-year-old son was at school. Owner of the building informed the police about the incident.

The hospital is short of staff and employees are overburdened. The authorities repeatedly requested the government to appoint more staff. SP Arjit Sen Thakur said a case had been registered.

Relatives of Monica blocked the Hamirpur-Shimla highway on Friday.

Placing her body on the road and raising slogans against the police and hospital authorities, they demanded that all those named by her in the suicide note, who allegedly harassed her, be arrested at the earliest.

The police have initiated an investigation into the case but no arrests have been made.
