A man posing as a customer stole cash from a garment shop situated in Gandhi Nagar yesterday.

Mohammad Samin, owner of ‘Fine and Arts’, said yesterday, a customer entered his shop and asked for garments. “I asked my shop worker to attend to the customer. The customer, who was wearing an orange-coloured cap, asked my worker to show several types of clothes. He selected more than 24 pieces. While selecting the clothes, he asked my worker to bring a polythene bag from his scooter parked outside.

“The moment worker went outside to fetch the polythene bag, the customer opened the cash box and stole Rs 10,000 in cash, a mobile phone and important documents. When I arrived at the shop, the customer left, saying that he would place the order some other day. When I checked the cash box after some time, I found the cash missing,” he alleged.

The thief has been caught on a CCTV camera installed at the nearby shop. The shop owner said he had lodged a complaint with the Salem Tabri police station. He said he found his mobile phone and documents dumped on a road in Jassian this morning.

Locksmiths steal ornaments worth Rs 4 lakh

A man stole gold ornaments worth Rs 4 lakh on the pretext of repairing the lock of an almirah at a house in Sector 39, Chandigarh Road. The house owner, Ramanjeet Kaur, alleged that on February 15, she saw two locksmiths in her street. She asked them to repair the lock of her almirah. While they were repairing the lock, they stole the gold ornaments kept in it. She came to know about the theft after the locksmiths had left.
