A man was stabbed to death by his elder brother and other relatives over a land dispute in Saidpur Kalan village here on Sunday evening. The Amritsar rural police have booked four persons, including a woman, in this connection.

The deceased has been identified as Dharam Singh (35) while those booked are Nanak Singh, his wife Guro and two sons — Bittu Singh and Bagga Singh — all residents of the same village.

The two families had a land dispute over a 100-yard land. The police have registered a case under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC. Raids are being conducted to nab them.

Swarn Kaur, wife of the deceased, stated to the police that earlier the dispute was settled within the family and only a small portion of land was under the possession of Dharam Singh. She said her husband had assured Nanak Singh that he would vacate the land after harvesting the wheat crop and would also give them wheat until the land was in his control.

However, Nanak Singh was adamant and stressed on vacating the land immediately. At around 5 pm on Sunday, Dharam Singh, his younger brother Jarnail Singh and elder brother Sucha Singh were sitting in the house and discussing some matter when the accused turned up and accosted him. The complainant said Nanak Singh was equipped with some sharp weapon. He stabbed Dharam Singh, leaving him critically injured. Dharam died while being taken to a hospital.

Harsandeep Singh, SHO, Bhindi Saida police station, said raids were on to arrest the accused who fled the scene after the incident.

Those booked have been identified as Harmanpreet Singh of Dhariwal Kaler, Manpreet Singh of Chamiari, Gurlal Singh of Khalra and Gursahib Singh of Isapur village.

Complainant Davinder Kaur stated to the police that Harmanpreet and his accomplices came shouting to her house and challenged the family to come out. They hurled bricks and stones and also opened fire into the air, she said. She said a land dispute between them was the reason behind the incident.
