Amritsar, May 13

A group of men, equipped with sharp weapons, thrashed a resident of Bhagupur Utar village, falling under Lopoke police station, here on Friday. An old enmity is stated to be the reason behind it. A complaint was lodged with the police on Sunday after efforts to make both the groups reach a compromise failed.

Those booked have been identified as Labh Singh, Major Singh, Dilbagh Singh, Jobabpreet Singh, Narinder Singh, Jarnail Singh and Kulwinder Singh, all residents of Bhagupur Utar village. They have been charged with attempt to murder, assault and causing grievous injuries.

Complainant Salinder Singh stated to the police that he was alone at home as his two sons Harpal Singh and Gurpal Singh had gone to bring earth in a tractor-trolley on Friday. He said the accused, armed with sharp-edge weapons and sticks barged into his house and assaulted him. They left him seriously injured. He said his family members rushed him to a hospital for treatment.

According to Salinder, in 2018 a complaint was lodged against the accused after they allegedly damaged a bridge on a drain which connected the agricultural land near the Pakistan border. He said a case was registered against them after the security forces impressed upon his brother to lodge the complaint as it hampered their movements as well. He said the accused kept a grudge against them and therefore found an opportunity on Friday for attacking him.

Gurdeep Singh, investigating officer, said raids were on as the accused were absconding. He said a case under Sections 307, 452, 323, 324, 148, 149 and 120-B of the IPC was registered against them.
