Maintain decorum in political debates, says Speaker

JALANDHAR: Describing the difference of opinion as the beauty of the democratic process, Rana KP Singh, Speaker, Punjab Vidhan Sabha, today called upon the political parties to maintain decorum in debates as a real tribute to the forefathers of the Constitution.

Describing the difference of opinion as the beauty of the democratic process, Rana KP Singh, Speaker, Punjab Vidhan Sabha, today called upon the political parties to maintain decorum in debates as a real tribute to the forefathers of the Constitution.

Addressing the gathering after unfurling the Tricolour here at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium, the Speaker, while expressing concern over the declining quality of political dialogue amongst the political rivals, said it was the need of the hour to reverse this trend.

He said everyone should peep into his conscience to look at what he was doing for fulfilling the aspirations of the freedom fighters. Giving a clarion call to the people, the Speaker asked them to work zealously for restoring the pristine glory of the state.

He said it was the high time when our talks about the rights should take a backseat and we must focus on our duties towards the state and nation.The state government has already taken massive steps to waive off the farm loans in the state, he added.

Recalling the sacrifices made by Punjabis in the freedom struggle, the Speaker mentioned that 80 per cent sacrifices had been made by the Punjabis alone in the national freedom movement, despite the fact that they merely constituted two per cent of country’s population.

Rana KP Singh lauded the Punjabi fraternity for contributing more than 60 per cent food grains in the national food kitty.

He took a salute during an impressive march past by the contingents of the Central Reserve Police Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Punjab Police, Home Guards, NCC, Bharat Scouts and Guides led by the Parade Commander Assistant Commissioner of Police Jaspreet Singh.

Likewise, cultural programmes including a mass PT show, giddha, bhangra and other traditional folk dances were presented on the occasion.

Later the Speaker, accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma and the Commissioner of Police Praveen Kumar Sinha, also felicitated eminent freedom fighters. He also honoured officers, employees and persons from various walks of life for their contribution towards society.
