Webcasting to be done in 50 pc booths: DC

Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Isha Kalia said: “Vehicles carrying electronic Voting Machines EVM and Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines to the booths and back will be fitted with GPS devices so that the vehicles carrying machines can be monitored.”

She said while addressing mediapersons here today.

“Five model booths, two women pink booths and a PWD booth will be there in each Assembly constituency. Besides webcasting is being arranged in 50 per cent booths at the 1,911 polling booths of the Lok Sabha segment in Hoshiarpur,” she said.

“Such efforts are being made and the voting process will be monitored especially in sensitive and highly sensitive booths,” she added.

Kalia said: “As per the schedule announced, the filing of nomination papers for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections has been started today and will continue till April 29. The scrutiny of the nominations would be done on April 30 and the last date of withdrawal of candidature will be May 2.”

The nomination papers are to be filed in the office of Deputy Commissioner Hoshiarpur-cum- returning officer for 5- Hoshiarpur (SC) constituency between 11 am to 3 pm on any day from April 22 to April 29 except the public holidays on April 27 and 28 (Saturday and Sunday).

“April 27 being the 4th Saturday while April 28, 2019 being Sunday are holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. Therefore, nomination papers cannot be presented to the Returning Officer on these days,” she said.

The DC said: “The nominations papers are to be filed in Form 2-A. Blank forms are available at the Returning Officer-cum-District Election Officer’s office.”

“As may as 16 lakh registered voters in the constituency and there are 1,911 polling stations out of which 50 per cent polling booths will be covered under web casting on the polling day,” she added.

“ The voting will be held on May 19 from 7.00 am to 6.00 pm and the counting of votes would begin May 23 from 8:00 am.” she added.

The District Election Officer (DEO) said: “Since the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct(MCC), drugs and other contraband worth Rs 2 crore 19 lakh have been seized so far.”

She said: “So far, 15,487 litters liquor worth Rs 43,85,343 has been seized and 1,666-kg narcotics worth Rs 1,75,43,259 have been seized. Till April 21, 128 complaints regarding violation of MCC have been received, out of which 120 have been disposed of.”

“Besides, 65 complaints have been received through eVIGIL, out of which 36 have been disposed off, while 29 were not actionable,” added the DEO.

SSP J Ellanchezhian said: “Action is being taken by the police for the strict enforcement of MCC in the district. More than 97 per cent of the weapons have been deposited. Steps are being taken against the drug peddlers and anti-social elements so that the elections can be held peacefully.”
