Bathinda, August 27

Litigants are a disturbed lot as district court lawyers have been on strike since August 17. As a result, cases are being adjourned.

Notably, in their bid to express resentment over the spat between lawyer Navdeep Singh Jeeda and police constable Ranjit Singh at Ghorewala Chowk on August 17 morning, the lawyers are observing strike since that day.

Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Bathinda city, said, “Owing to the ongoing strike by the lawyers, the advocate handling my property dispute case a few days back refused to take up my case. As a result, the judge adjourned the hearing for the next date. Now, I have to visit the district courts again.”

A group of litigants said there must be a provision that even if there was a strike, the lawyers must take up important cases for hearing so that litigants did not have to suffer.

Meanwhile, the District Bar Association today convened a meeting in which it was decided that from Wednesday the lawyers would stage protest from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm and after that the court working would go as per routine in second half of the day.

District Bar Association president Kanwaljit Singh Kuti said, “From Wednesday we have decided to stage protest from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm and later attend courts in second half”.

He also stated that the police was not making advocate Navdeep Singh Jeeda join the investigation in this case, so today was the first hearing in a case of Jeeda, where we have made him join the investigation and we will also get DDR copy of the case registered against police constable Ranjit Singh, which we will get by today.

Kuti also stated that now we staging protest demanding that police should also identify and register case against the persons who accompanied traffic police constable Ranjit Singh in assaulting advocate Navdeep Singh Jeeda at Ajit Road.

It is pertinent to mention that lawyers today also staged protest against the Bathinda police outside the SSP office and suspended the court work.
