Kullu is set to have solid and liquid waste management plant on the pattern of Aima panchayat of Palampur in Kangra district.

Deputy Commissioner Yunus said that work on this project would be completed in the next two months as the process has already started and the provision of the funds has been made.

Solid and liquid waste will be collected from all 11 wards of Kullu Municipal Committee in a scientific way. The garbage so collected would be converted into compost through plant which would also cater to the needs of farmers. High capacity incinerators would be installed to ensure that environment around the plant was people friendly, he said.

Councillors and officials of Kullu MC have already visited the plants of Palampur and Indore and worked out modalities, he said. The plant would have capacity to generate 1.5 MW electricity.

The DC said all vehicles carrying garbage would be GPS enabled and he himself would monitor disposal of the garbage. CCTVs would be installed at key places. Zero tolerance would be adopted at the time of garbage collection and its disposal. Defaulters would be dealt with strictly. Additional incentives will be given to those involved in collection of waste. He said that after Kullu, a similar plant will be set up in Bhuntar land for which is being explored. Process has already been initiated to establish such plants in Banjar and Anni.
