Kurukshetra, December 20

Kurukshetra University (KU) campus president of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Sumit Rana, and another student have been rusticated on the charges of ragging.

The KU proctor, Prof RK Deswal, said on Thursday that Rana, a first-year MA sociology student, and Nitin Sharma, a first-year Institute of Law student, were rusticated on December 11 and barred from entering the university campus.

He said two complaints were filed online on the anti-ragging cell of the UGC last week.

He said a student of the University College, an undergraduate college on the KU campus, had charged Nitin with ragging by means of “mental and physical harassment”.

He said later, Sumit faced similar charges of ragging. He said the three students had been residing in Ch Ranbir Singh Hostel and knew each other.

“The University College student, complainant in one case, and Nitin were roommates. Nitin was given a hostel room to be shared with the college student after Sumit gave an undertaking to own responsibility of the former. Disciplinary action was taken as per protocol of anti-ragging rules,” he said.

Deswal said the three students had approached the Kurukshetra University with a plea they had a quarrel over an issue and allegations of ragging had emerged due to a misunderstanding.

“They have been advised to approach the UGC. The university cannot initiate any action in this case without a direction from the UGC,” he said.
