Learning a new language might seem a challenge if you have the right approach and technique. Here is a column that will help you with tips on how to improve your proficiency in English language. A few exercises and practice questions will help you use the tips and examine its effectiveness. Here’s what we have for you today:

Work on synonyms

In order to check and polish your vocabulary, you must try to use synonyms (other words that have similar meanings). For example, the adjective “hardworking” has synonyms like diligent determined, enterprising etc. When you don’t get the exact word to communicate an idea, try to explain or describe it using other words. This is how you will be able to expand your vocabulary box.

Another tip for practice is paraphrasing, which means stating a sentence in different ways. Try narrating the story of your favorite movie to a friend or brief out the daily news to someone at home, using your own words. This will help you experiment with different sentence structures

Exercise

Read the text and attempt the questions given below.

For teens to survive college life these days, a positive and sociable outlook is necessary. However, they must be very careful and recognize what is good and bad. They must remind themselves that if they judge or insult others there will be others doing the same to them as well. It is good to have a role model that one can look up to and admire. It then gives one an aim and purpose in life that they must strive to attain.

1. Fill in the gaps with appropriate words. The sentence structure and words may differ from the original text but must convey the same meaning.
